MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 19

Chicago White Sox vs. Philadelphia Phillies

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

Spencer Turnbull has a 1.80 ERA so far this year, but that doesn’t really matter to me at all. The most important factor in his game is that he gets the ooportunity to face the worst offense in baseball. Not only are the White Sox not good early on in the game, but they’ve been awful for all nine innings. They’re averaging just 2.11 runs per game, which is exactly what you want to see as you search for a NRFI opportunity.

Coming back the other way is a little trickier for the NRFI. On one hand, the Phillies have been good early in the game. The top of their order is as good as most in baseball. However, they do also strike out a fair amount (nearly once an inning on average). Garrett Crochet is the perfect pitcher to take advantage of that fact. He has 31 strikeouts in 22.2 innings so far this year. He got roughed up a bit by the Reds in his last start, but threw a scoreless first. I expect another good start from him here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 19: No (-115)

Houston Astros vs. Washington Nationals

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV

Nobody is really sure what to expect of Justin Verlander in this one. He’s making his season debut nearly three weeks into the season with everybody else already finding their groove. One team that has yet to find that groove is Washington, who has scored a first inning run in just 11.1% of the time. They average 0.17 runs per game in the first inning, which is good for 29th in the MLB. If there’s a team to help Verlander get going, this is it.

Mackenzie Gore will take the hill against the Astros potent offense. He has yet to allow a first inning run this year and is carrying a 2.81 ERA into the contest. He also has a fair amount of success against some of the guys Houston will have at the top of their order. Altuve, Bregman, and Abreu have combined to go 0-for-6 against Gore all-time.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 19: No (-115)
