MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 21

Los Angeles Angels vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

I went with this game on Saturday and it backfired royally. The Angels put up a pair in the top of the first and the Reds scored five in the bottom half. Those five runs for the Reds were two and a half times what they had on the season so far (19 games). I can’t imagine them doing that in back to back games here.

So on one side we have a fade of an offense that just unrealistically busted out of a slump. On the other side, we have faith in the starting pitcher to stifle things early. Frankie Montas had a minor issue with control last time out. Prior to that game with the Mariners, Montas had been solid – particularly early in the game. Given that, let’s rebound from the outburst last time and get us another NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 21: No (+100)

Texas Rangers vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:00 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – ESPN

I know these two teams are usually big run scorers, but hear me out as to why I like the NRFI here.

The Rangers have scored in three of their last four first innings. However, if you look at those games, they were either aided by an early home run or some walks. Unfortunate for them in this game, they draw Braves prospect Dairus Vines. While Vines might not be their best arm, he is wildly accurate (2.25% walk rate in AAA last year) and has a low home run rate. As a result, I think he might just be the krytonite for the Rangers.

On the other side, the Braves offense has been solid, but they’ve been sparking a lot of their run scoring with the bottom of their order. Additionally, they’ll face Michael Lorenzen, who looked outstanding last time out in his season debut. He held the Tigers scoreless over five innings in that start.

When you put all of this together, and add in that we’re looking at an NRFI with plus-money odds, it’s a tempting play.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 21: No (+105)
