MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 23
San Francisco Giants vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 12:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV
There might be some people out there betting against Paul Skenes, but I won’t be one of them. He’s looked every bit the part since coming to the majors. His 7.0 inning, 11-strikeout, shutout outing in his second career start is enough for me to think he’d stop just about any offense. The Giants are 21st in first inning runs and 18th in total runs – so they aren’t anything in particular to worry about.
On the other side, Mason Black has not been nearly as good as San Francisco was hoping. The Giants righty has touched up in just about every start he’s had. However, if there’s a team to get right against, it would be the anemic offense of Pittsburgh. They rank 25th in runs and first inning runs. Plus, they haven’t scored in the first inning in any of their last three games.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 23: No (-115)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Detroit Tigers
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast –MLB TV
Speaking of anemic offenses, neither the Blue Jays nor the Tigers have lived up to the pre-season hype at this point. They both reside in or near the bottom of their division and ditto with their run scoring. The Tigers are averaging 4.12 runs per game and are ranked 19th in MLB (only ahead of the White Sox in the AL Central). The Blue Jays are averaging 3.79 per game and are dead last in the AL East.
On top of the slow offensive production, each team sends out one of, if not their best, arms. Jack Flaherty and his 3.79 ERA takes the hill for the Tigers. He’s allowed three or fewer runs in four straight starts and two or fewer in three of those.
Kevin Gausman takes the bump for Toronto. Apart from getting roughed up by the Twins, he’s been under three earned runs in every game since early April. That should make for an easy NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 23: No (-145)
