MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 2

San Diego Padres vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV

This one is a bit of a bold play for the NRFI being that the Padres are second in the majors in first inning runs – only behind the Phillies. However, I’ve got faith in the arm that’s going to try to stop them. Cole Ragans has electric stuff and it’s played up lately. Over his last three outings (18.0 innings), he’s allowed just two earned runs. In that stretch, he’s picked up 26 strikeouts. Given that run, I feel like we can trust him to get through at least one inning here.

In the bottom half of the inning, we’ll have another solid hitting team. The Royals have been a top five offense and have been in the top five of first inning offense as well. Again, I’m going to put faith in the man heading to the bump to limit that offense. Michael King, one of the key pieces of the Juan Soto trade, had a great May. He maintained a 3.00 ERA through the month and only once allowed more than three earned runs. In fact, he held opponents to one or fewer in three of the five starts.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 2: No (-130)

Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

Despite having the advantage of playing at elevation, the Rockies are still ranked 19th in MLB. They’ve obviously been much worse on the road, where they’re one of the five worst teams in the league at scoring runs. That alone should set us up for an NRFI here.

However, we get even more help in the top of the innings. Gavin Stone has held opponents to one or less runs in five of his last six starts. Last time out he went for seven strikeouts in seven scoreless against the Mets.

We’re likely to sweat a bit more in the bottom half of the inning with this Dodgers’ lineup coming to the plate. However, like in the other game, I’m putting my faith in the starter for Colorado. Austin Gomber has been hot – limiting his last four opponents to one or less earned runs. He’s only allowed two earned runs in those last four starts (26.2 innings). I’ll give him and his 2.76 ERA a chance to bring this one home for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 2: No (-120)
