MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 3
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Philadelphia Phillies
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV
Here we are with the number one and number two teams in the majors in run scoring. However, I’m still getting down on the NRFI for this one. The reason is simple – I love the pitching matchup here, and I think they can silence the bats early.
In the top half of the inning, the Brew Crew will face Zack Wheeler with his 2.32 ERA and sub-1.00 WHIP. He’s held each of his last three opponents to two or less earned runs. That span includes a 6.0-inning, scoreless outing last time out against the Giants. He has also been historically good against the Brewers with just a 2.68 ERA with 66 strikeouts in 57.0 innings.
In the bottom half of the inning, Bryse Wilson takes the hill. He allowed three earned runs to the Cubs last outing, which was the first time he had allowed that many in a game this season. While his strikeout numbers are a touch lower than I’d like, that actually plays well against the Phillies here. They are a low strikeout team, so I like having them face someone who induces bad contact.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 3: No (-125)
New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
Nobody in the league is worse at scoring in the first inning than the Nationals. They average just 0.24 runs per game in the first. That puts them 0.13 behind the lowly White Sox and their rough offense. They haven’t scored a first inning run in a week, and now they’ll face Tylor Megill. He has allowed just three earned runs over his first three starts (16.0 innings) and seems to be getting better. All that points to an NRFI here.
MacKenzie Gore should set up the NRFI in the top half of the inning. The Nationals’ lefty has six straight starts where he’s allowed two or fewer runs. He looked near unhittable in his last outing against the Braves, going 5.1 and striking out 10. The Mets are a middle of the pack team in terms of run scoring and in the bottom third of the league in first inning runs. That’s not exactly the bats you’d expect to break out on Gore.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 3: No (-135)
