College Baseball Picks For June 8th – NCAA Baseball Tournament
All College Baseball Bets Are To Win 1 Unit
9 AM PT +120 NC State at Georgia -150
PROBABLE PITCHERS
NC State: Sam Highfill Grad RHP: 6-2, 5.35 ERA, 73 K, 38 BB, 74 IP
Georgia: Kolten Smith SO RHP: 9-2, 4.41 ERA, 99 K, 19 BB, 65.1 IP, 1.80 SIERA
Georgia’s offense has a 138 wRC+, which puts them second nationally. This team can slug up and down the lineup. Their .594 slugging percentage puts them third in the nation. The Dawgs have hit 145 homers, which is also third in the country.
They are led by Charlie Condon, who is having one of the best offensive seasons in college baseball history. Earlier this season, Condon broke the BBCOR record for home runs in a season. He is now at 36 through 57 games and is still racking them up. Condon isn’t just a slugger, though; he leads the country with a .445 batting average. He is surrounded by six other teammates who have averages over .280 as well. One of them is Corey Collins, who leads the country with a .583 on-base percentage.
NC State’s Sam Highfill has been rough lately. Highfill has a 6.37 ERA in his last five starts, AND he has a 9.30 ERA on the road. Against this potent Bulldogs offense, that just won’t fly. Georgia will counter with Kolten Smith. His recent form has been the polar opposite of Highfill (2.33 Home ERA and 1.59 ERA in his last 9 appearances).
The Bet: -150 Georgia ML
8:00 AM PT -7.5 Tennessee vs Evansville +7.5
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Tennessee: Drew Beam JR RHP: 8-2, 4.16 ERA, 80 K, 22 BB, 88.2 IP
Evansville: Donovan Schultz SR LHP: 6-2, 5.84 ERA, 72 K, 32 BB, 89.1 IP, 4.35 SIERA
This is not football. College Baseball is being played on Saturday. 7.5 runs is disrespectful to one of the final 16 teams remaining in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Evansville is more than capable of scoring runs. The Purple Aces have a 119 wRC+ and .918 Team OPS. In Game 1 against AJ Causey, Evansville scored 3 runs against him. Against Causey that is more runs scored than Texas A&M, Florida, South Carolina, LSU, Alabama, and Illinois to name a few, all six of those squads were NCAA Tournament teams. Evansville’s offense isn’t a slouch.
Add in the fact that Drew Beam is the biggest household-name starting pitcher that Tennessee has. That is driving the price up. However, Beam has a 6.89 ERA in his last three starts. The Purple Aces have a chance to get to Beam in this game. Evansville’s Kip Fougerousse has hit a home run in 8 of his last 10 games. Mark Shallenberger has a .383 batting average this season, which ranks him 35th nationally.
Consider me a sucker in the NCAA Baseball gambling market, but a touchdown and a half is a crazy run line in a Super Regional game.
The Bet: -105 Evansville +7.5
Noon PT Virginia at Kansas State
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Virginia: Jay Woolfolk JR RHP: 3-1, 6.15 ERA, 57 K, 35 BB, 52.2 IP, 4.26 SIERA
Kansas State: Jackson Wentworth SO RHP: 5-5, 4.11 ERA, 110 K, 25 BB, 81 IP, 2.28 SIERA
This is a kitchen sink game. That means Kansas State may not win this game, but you best bet that Head Coach Pete Hughes and the Wildcats will throw everything and the kitchen sink. Jackson Wentworth has been K-State’s most consistent pitcher this season. Also, Tyson Neighbors, one of the nation’s best relief pitchers, will be available from the bullpen at the first sign of trouble.
Hughes and the Wildcats will not want to leave Neighbors’ bullets unused while heading back home eliminated from the postseason. The duo of Wentworth and Neighbors, who has a 3.93 ERA and 60 K in 36.2 IP, should be able to hold a very good Virginia offense at bay enough for K-State to manufacture some runs and keep this ballgame close, maybe even win it.
The Bet: -115 Kansas State +3.5
